Stamps & Postmarks
A stamp and a postmark occupy the same corner but say different things. One is issued to account for postage. The other records handling and may cancel the stamp to prevent reuse. Together with the envelope, they can preserve evidence of a journey.
The miniature that changed the envelope
Britain’s Penny Black went on sale on 1 May 1840 and became valid for postage on 6 May. The distinction matters: a sale date and a first valid use are not interchangeable. The Postal Museum’s account also describes the red Maltese Cross cancellation devised to prevent reuse. This was a practical system as well as a small piece of printed design.
Read the mark before naming it
Look for the place, date, shape and relationship to the stamp. Some impressions are clear; others are partial or overprinted. A cancellation can cross both stamp and envelope, and one envelope may carry several marks. Record what you can actually read before supplying a likely place or date from context. A faint circle alone cannot prove a route or authenticate an object.
A message left open
Austria-Hungary introduced its postal correspondence card on 1 October 1869. The Museum Foundation for Post and Telecommunications holds an example sent from Perg to Kirchdorf on that date. These early official cards should not be confused with the later illustrated holiday postcard. The short, openly readable format was itself the innovation.
An agreement between networks
On 9 October 1874, the Treaty of Bern established the General Postal Union. It took the name Universal Postal Union in 1878. The UPU’s own history explains the effort to simplify international postal exchange. Naming the original union avoids putting a later title into an earlier document.
A careful first
The Smithsonian National Postal Museum identifies the Allahabad–Naini flight of 18 February 1911 as the first official airmail flown by airplane. Henri Pequet carried the mail in India. Earlier airborne mail existed, so “by airplane” and “official” are useful limits, not expendable words.
Keep an observation sheet
For an interesting cover, note the visible address format, stamp position, legible marks and condition before interpreting them. Photograph both sides without forcing folds flat. Do not clean or lift a stamp to improve its appearance; that can remove evidence. Specialist examination is needed for authenticity, rarity and value. The invented stamps in this almanac’s generated illustrations are visual studies, not historical specimens or valid postage.
